I believe I was clumsy in my presentation this Sunday, to which I apologize. I do believe their is honest room in the body of Christ for those that see the spirit and soul as synonymous (though I do not share those views).
The main point I was trying to communicate was that the body and it’s carnal desires are many times elevated over our spirit, the value of eternity, and those parts of us that will remain. Ultimately I was trying to communicate our value in God’s eyes, and the need to focus on the eternal and receive Christ.
MY understanding of our formation is this:
We are made up of a Spirit, Soul and Body.
Spirit – The part of us that connects with the Holy Spirit and will continue on for eternity.
Soul – Our mind, will and emotions. This is who we truly are and will continue on.
Body – The thing in which we are physically housed. When this body is done, in eternity we will be given a new (or renewed) body. (2 Cor 5:8 / Phil 3:21 / 1 Cor. 15:52)
It’s practical importance is this:
Our spirit as it is connected with the Holy Spirit (at salvation) is to lead our lives.
Our soul is to be conformed to this direction.
And our body is to serve and physically live out this direction.
In our fallen state our body and it’s desires are leading us.
Our soul is being conformed to those base carnal desires.
And our soul is dead in our sins. (Col 2:13)
